How Are Custom Printed Box Prices Determined?

A box price is not a single number; it is the combination of several variables. If you understand them you can plan your budget accurately and avoid unnecessary cost.

1. Quantity — the most decisive factor

In offset printing, costs such as plate preparation, machine setup and the cutting die are one-off. That fixed cost is divided across the total quantity. This is why there is a significant difference between the unit price of 500 boxes and 5,000 boxes.

Practical advice: estimating a year of demand and printing it in one run is far more economical than printing the same job three times. However, if information may change (address, campaign, contents list), do not over-print.

2. Size and yield per sheet

Boxes are printed nested on large sheets. How many boxes come out of one sheet directly affects cost. Sometimes a few millimetres of change in box dimensions increases the yield per sheet and noticeably lowers the cost.

3. Board type and grammage

Board is a significant part of the cost. If 300 gsm is enough instead of 350 gsm, or coated board does the job instead of bristol, you save without compromising quality.

4. Print colours

There is a difference in plates and machine setup between single-colour and four-colour (CMYK) printing. Minimally designed, single-colour boxes look elegant and are more economical.

5. Lamination and special processes

Lamination (matte/gloss), foil, embossing and spot UV add value to a box, but each is a separate production step. If your budget is tight, applying foil only to the logo rather than laminating the whole box creates a strong effect.

6. Cutting die

A cutting die is prepared once for each new size and that is a one-off charge. When you reorder the same size the die charge is not applied again — which is why second orders are always cheaper.
